The story of the Indian clerk, a self-taught mathematician, producing extraordinary mathematical results which took him to Cambridge only to suffer an early death at the age of 32, is well known. Ramanujan: Letters and Commentary

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December in the home of his maternal grandmother in Erode, India, a small town located about miles southwest of Madras. Soon thereafter, his mother returned with her son to her home in Kumbakonam, approximately miles south—southwest of Madras. Ramanujan's father was a clerk in a cloth merchant's shop, and his mother took in local college students to augment the family's meager income. Ramanujan's mathematical talent was recognized in grammar school, and he won prizes, usually books of English poetry, in recognition of his mathematical skills. At the age of 15, Ramanujan borrowed G.

Bruce Carl Berndt born March 13, , in St. Joseph , Michigan is an American mathematician. Berndt attended college at Albion College , graduating in , where he also ran track. He received his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He lectured for a year at the University of Glasgow and then, in , was appointed an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he has remained since. In —74 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Berndt is an analytic number theorist who is probably best known for his work explicating the discoveries of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
