The key difference between hubs, switches and bridges is that hubs operate at Layer 1 of the OSI model, while bridges and switches work with MAC addresses at Layer 2. Hubs broadcast incoming traffic on all ports, whereas bridges and switches only route traffic towards their addressed destinations.
5.6 Bridges and Switches
Institutions — including, companies, universities and high schools — typically consist of many departments, with each department having and managing its own Ethernet LAN. Naturally, an institution will want its departments to interconnect their departmental LAN segments. In this section, we consider a number of different approaches in which LANs can be connected together. We'll cover three approaches, hubs, bridges, and switches in the following subsections. All three of these approaches are in widespread use today. The simplest way to interconnect LANs is to use a hub.
The term Layer 2 is adopted from the Open System Interconnect OSI model, which is a reference model for explaining and describing network communications. Switches and bridges are mostly used for Layer 2 switching. They help to break up large size collision domain into separate smaller ones. They interconnect networks at layer 2, mostly at the MAC sub-layer, and operate as bridges. It builds tables for the transfer of frames among systems. Layer 2 ethernet switches are faster compared to routers, as they do not take much time for evaluation at the network layer header information. Instead, they should look at the frame's hardware addresses, which helps you decide what action needs to take like forward, flood, or drop it.

Repeater — A repeater operates at the physical layer. Its job is to regenerate the signal over the same network before the signal becomes too weak or corrupted so as to extend the length to which the signal can be transmitted over the same network. An important point to be noted about repeaters is that they do not amplify the signal. When the signal becomes weak, they copy the signal bit by bit and regenerate it at the original strength.
Bridge, known as network bridge, is a network interconnection device used to connect two or more local area networks. It is responsible for network bridging, which receives and amplifies signals from a network cable, and then sends them to the next cable. Normally, it connects multiple network segments of the network at the data link layer OSI model layer 2.

Bridges or switches are used to connect these subdivided segments of networks. In a long way, the terms bridge and switch are use interchangeably. Bridge and switch both provide the same functionality but the switch does it with greater efficiency. A bridge connects smaller network segments to form a large network, and it also relays frame from one LAN to another LAN.
