Box and Whiskers... Analyzing and Creating

In descriptive statistics , a box plot or boxplot is a method for graphically depicting groups of numerical data through their quartiles. Box plots may also have lines extending from the boxes whiskers indicating variability outside the upper and lower quartiles, hence the terms box-and-whisker plot and box-and-whisker diagram. Outliers may be plotted as individual points. Box plots are non-parametric : they display variation in samples of a statistical population without making any assumptions of the underlying statistical distribution though Tukey's boxplot assumes symmetry for the whiskers and normality for their length. The spacings between the different parts of the box indicate the degree of dispersion spread and skewness in the data, and show outliers. In addition to the points themselves, they allow one to visually estimate various L-estimators , notably the interquartile range , midhinge , range , mid-range , and trimean.

In its simplest form, the boxplot presents five sample statistics - the minimum , the lower quartile , the median , the upper quartile and the maximum - in a visual display. The box of the plot is a rectangle which encloses the middle half of the sample, with an end at each quartile. The length of the box is thus the interquartile range of the sample. The other dimension of the box does not represent anything in particular. A line is drawn across the box at the sample median. Whiskers sprout from the two ends of the box until they reach the sample maximum and minimum.

This will be a whole group discussion based upon the teacher scripted questions. The reason I chose to do this first was to get the students thinking about those measures and how they will relate to the box plots. Box plots are great for showing median and range, however, they do not represent the mean or m ode. Begin the middle part of the lesson by explaining and displaying a box plot.
