The greenhouse effect is the process by which radiation from a planet's atmosphere warms the planet's surface to a temperature above what it would be without this atmosphere.

This activity by the Royal Society of Chemistry looks at the greenhouse gas effect on climate change taking into account the increase in temperature and carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Also included is a study of some of the other gases which contribute to the greenhouse effect and a description of how molecules interact with radiation. This lesson should take about four hours of class time. It includes material for lectures about climate change and greenhouse gases, including descriptions and figures.

Greenhouse effect

Of those gases, known as greenhouse gases , water vapour has the largest effect. The origins of the term greenhouse effect are unclear. Fourier, however, neither used the term greenhouse effect nor credited atmospheric gases with keeping Earth warm. This radiation, unlike visible light, tends to be absorbed by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, raising its temperature. Despite its name, the greenhouse effect is different from the warming in a greenhouse , where panes of glass transmit visible sunlight but hold heat inside the building by trapping warmed air. Although the greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon, it is possible that the effect could be intensified by the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as the result of human activity.

Search All Stories The 'greenhouse effect' is the warming of climate that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Certain gases in the atmosphere resemble glass in a greenhouse, allowing sunlight to pass into the 'greenhouse,' but blocking Earth's heat from escaping into space. The gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect include water vapor, carbon dioxide CO2 , methane, nitrous oxides, and chlorofluorocarbons CFCs. On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse.

Greenhouse Gases Effect on Global Warming

Glaciers are melting , sea levels are rising, cloud forests are dying , and wildlife is scrambling to keep pace. It has become clear that humans have caused most of the past century's warming by releasing heat-trapping gases as we power our modern lives. Called greenhouse gases, their levels are higher now than at any time in the last , years.

The major greenhouse gases emitted by the United States as a result of human activity, and their percentage share of total U. There are other greenhouse gases that are not counted in United States or international greenhouse gas inventories:. This greenhouse effect traps radiation from the sun and warms the planet's surface.

While other planets in Earth's solar system are either scorching hot or bitterly cold, Earth's surface has relatively mild, stable temperatures.
