Reading the John Updike stories: 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow and So Forth'
This is one of the more famous speeches written by Shakespeare, and delivered his famous character , Macbeth , in the play of the same title. He states that life is full of events and action, however absurd, and short, and completely meaningless at the end. The meaning of this phrase is that life is meaningless, useless, and empty; and that every day just creeps by like every other day. After his wife dies, time seems to Macbeth an intolerable burden, and the future an overwhelming force that leads him to his destiny. This is directly opposite of the conventional and easy future he had fantasized about having with his wife before murdering King Duncan. After the death of Lady Macbeth, he feels his future is hopelessly tedious, and empty, while life looks ridiculously short.
The famous "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" speech in Macbeth works on its own; the play works without the speech; and, in fact, including the speech in the play causes problems for interpretation. This paper argues that the speech was not written for the play in which it appears, but likely was written independently of the play and inserted because Shakespeare was eager to use it. For all that, though, the speech is not a flaw. Far from it, the speech is a profound meditation on the human condition, echoing Ecclesiastes and anticipating existentialism. Perhaps the most memorable soliloquy of all in Macbeth occurs in Act 5, scene 5. Malcolm and Macduff, with an army, are approaching Dunsinane. Lady Macbeth has just died, probably by her own hand.
