For a long period, these contacts were described from a Rome-centric point of view, looking at the connections between Rome and India.

Over the centuries, trade routes have been established that connected places where goods were produced with people living in other places who wanted to buy these items. Often, specific goods such as salt and spices were scarce and in high demand. People wanted and needed these things, so they were willing to travel to get them or to pay others to get them and bring them back.

By: Jacqueline H. Historical trade routes across Asia brought together diverse peoples and created markets that were highly cosmopolitan areas of intercultural contact. While individual traders from many different cultures met in these marketplaces, the existence of trading middlemen typically meant that many long-distance trade networks were actually the result of multiple shorter-distance exchanges. Thus commercial goods from one region often traveled farther than the individuals from that region, and the cultural contact between these regions came in the form of exchanged commodities rather than person-to-person interaction. Examining the everyday household objects traded between sometimes distant communities helps us to gain a new perspective on cultural contact and interaction.

A trade route is a logistical network identified as a series of pathways and stoppages used for the commercial transport of cargo. The term can also be used to refer to trade over bodies of water. Allowing goods to reach distant markets , a single trade route contains long-distance arteries , which may further be connected to smaller networks of commercial and noncommercial transportation routes. Among notable trade routes was the Amber Road , which served as a dependable network for long-distance trade. In modern times , commercial activity shifted from the major trade routes of the Old World to newer routes between modern nation-states.
