In mathematics and physics , the centroid or geometric center of a plane figure is the arithmetic mean position of all the points in the figure. Informally, it is the point at which a cutout of the shape could be perfectly balanced on the tip of a pin. The definition extends to any object in n - dimensional space : its centroid is the mean position of all the points in all of the coordinate directions.

Centre of gravity , in physics , an imaginary point in a body of matter where, for convenience in certain calculations, the total weight of the body may be thought to be concentrated. The concept is sometimes useful in designing static structures e. In a uniform gravitational field the centre of gravity is identical to the centre of mass , a term preferred by physicists. The two do not always coincide, however. An asymmetrical object composed of a variety of materials with different masses, however, is likely to have a centre of gravity located at some distance from its geometric centre. In some cases, such as hollow bodies or irregularly shaped objects, the centre of gravity or centre of mass may occur in space at a point external to the physical material—e.

We equivalently represent the system of forces by single force acting at a specific point. The centroid coincides with the center of mass or the center of gravity only if the material of the body is homogenous density or specific weight is constant throughout the body. Chapter 9: Center of Gravity and Centroid

The center of gravity is a geometric property of any object. The center of gravity is the average location of the weight of an object. We can completely describe the motion of any object through space in terms of the translation of the center of gravity of the object from one place to another, and the rotation of the object about its center of gravity if it is free to rotate. If the object is confined to rotate about some other point, like a hinge, we can still describe its motion. In flight, both airplanes and rockets rotate about their centers of gravity. A kite, on the other hand, rotates about the bridle point.

Centre of mass is the point at which the distribution of mass is equal in all directions, and does not depend on gravitational field. A toy bird balances when a pivot is placed at its centre of gravity. The centre of mass and the centre of gravity of an object are in the same position if the gravitational field in which the object exists is uniform.

Every object is said to weigh a certain amount and have mass. Both mass and weight come into play when you try to balance an object. While balancing, the centre of the object is where the gravitational force is concentrated. It is at the central point of the object where you can balance it. It is here where you will across two terms often confused with each other. They are Centre of Gravity and Centroid. Even though they consist of a common concept; Centre of Gravity and Centroid are two terms that differ based on the context in which it is used and the object it is used in regards to.

The centre centroid represents the centre of mass that is in the cross-section of the diagonals of the body, and gravity — the weight, the attractive force between particles in the universe under which the celestial bodies move. This concept allows the whole object to be viewed as one material point whose mass is equal to the total mass of that body. The centre of mass exists for any system of material points, regardless of whether a force is acting on the system or not. The centre of the mass is the point where the gravitational force is acting on the body.
