A ceramic is any of the various hard, brittle, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials made by shaping and then firing a nonmetallic mineral, such as clay, at a high temperature. The crystallinity of ceramic materials ranges from highly oriented to semi-crystalline, vitrified , and often completely amorphous glasses. Most often, fired ceramics are either vitrified or semi-vitrified as is the case with earthenware, stoneware , and porcelain.

Hello Readers, today in this paper we will be going to learn about Ceramics and their properties like Mechanical, Electrical, Physical and chemical. So let's get started. Most ceramics have a crystalline structure and exist in a wide variety of compositions and forms. The bonding between the atoms is primarily ionic and covalent to some extent. Examples of Natural Ceramics are silica, silicates, and clay minerals whereas the examples of Manufactured Ceramics are silicon carbide, silicon nitride, cement, etc. Ceramics are inorganic non-metallic materials that are a combination of one or more metals and some non-metals like oxygen, carbon, or nitrogen.

Advanced ceramic materials are engineered to outperform metals and polymers. High performance mechanical strengths include hardness, wear, rigidity, density, fracture toughness, and other application-specific mechanical requirements that often exceed steel, alloys, and plastics. Our materials are harder than every metal and naturally-occurring material known, except diamond. The harder a material, the more resistant it is to localized permanent deformation from indentation or abrasion. Rigidity MPa Advanced ceramics are highly rigid and do not bend easily. This means they provide exceptionally stiff, stable dimensional performance. In fact, CoorsTek ceramics deliver some of the highest stiffness-to-weight ratios for demanding, lightweight applications.


Whilst the most extravagant claims of the s in favour of advanced ceramic materials such as the all ceramic engine have largely proved inaccurate, it is true to say that ceramics have established themselves as key engineering materials. When used in conjunction with other materials, usually metals, they provide added functionality to components thereby improving application performance, once the appropriate joint design and technology have been identified. This strong bonding also accounts for the less attractive properties of ceramics, such as low ductility and low tensile strength. The wider range of properties, however, is not widely appreciated. For example, whilst ceramics are perceived as electrical and thermal insulators, ceramic oxides initially based on Y-Ba-Cu-O are the basis for high temperature superconductivity. Diamond, beryllia and silicon carbide have a higher thermal conductivity than aluminium or copper.
