Handbook of Offshore Oil and Gas Operations

Barnes, Kenneth B. The petroleum engineering profession has expanded rapidly and extensively in the past 20 years. Today, in the oil and gas fields, petroleum engineers are undertaking a great variety of duties and are successfully completing scores of worthwhile accomplishments. The petroleum engineering profession, however, in growing so rapidly has perhaps not had the opportunity to classify and organize some of its principal objectives and undertakings, to the extent of the other branches of engineering.

For example, the chemical engineers have long had the useful concept of "Unit Operations". This concept is defined as "any chemical engineering subject, on whatever scale conducted, may be resolved into a coordinate series of what may be termed "Unit Operations", and including: evaporation, adsorption, absorption, fluid flow, heat transfer, distillation, extraction, etc.

Economics and dictates of efficient practice have prompted this growing trend by petroleum engineers toward the use of a wide variety of processes, in situ in the oil and gas fields.

Field process operations covered in this paper are presented in their approximate sequence of operation as the oil and gas proceeds from the well head, as follows: Treating and Separation,. In this paper, the individual operations which make up "Field Processing Operations" can only be discussed in their broad aspects, and because of space limitations, with only brief mention of the detailed technical features which are involved. Nevertheless it is hoped that this paper will serve as a medium for further organization of these petroleum engineering operations, and to present to the industry the many important functions, often interlocking, performed by the petroleum engineer in conducting the most efficient handling of processes in the oil and gas fields Sign In or Register.
